The Boraginaceae family are characteristically bristly (hairy) although the internal tissue is soft and mucilaginous. The stems are round and leaves are usually simple, alternate with no stipules.
The flowers are found in tightly packed cymes. Petals open to form a bell or funnel shape. The petals can change colour as they mature from a pink to blue or purple (Lawrence).
