The Rosaceae (or rose) family contains trees, shrubs and herbs and provides many cultivated fruits. Plants usually have alternate leaves with stipules that adhere to the leaf stalk. They are frequently compound and the leaflets have saw-toothed margins. Flowers are usually regular with five petals and five sepals. There are usually numerous stamens (Barker).
Medicinally the leaves of this family tend to be high in tannins, having gentle astringent properties. They are anti-microbial (Barker). A very safe family. Members of this family are good for wound healing, ulcers and relief of diarrhoea (Lawrence).
